Branches

Using only classic musique concrète techniques, "Branches" is a tribute to the French composer Bernard Parmegiani (1927-2013). In his 48 minute-long piece "De Natura Sonorum" (1975) he explores the mutual influences of electronic, instrumental and everyday sounds. Whereas the pioneers of musique concrète like Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry shared little enthusiasm for electronic instruments during that time, “De Natura Sonorum” proofed Parmegiani to be the master of combining synthetic and natural sounds.

Working within certain technical limits led to unexpected results and entailed new directions. Following serendipities, the rhythmic structures and inherent qualities of the material, that was captured in and outside the studio, introduced not only a sense of playfulness but the joy of creative meandering.
